Lululemon tells me to “do one thing each day that scares you.” Thanks to 2020, I don’t even have to try!
Hi! This is Coach MK and THIS is The Morning Mantra.
Today’s Mantra is: LET'S GO
It’s been awhile. Sorry for that. We had some personnel changes back in March, and Fitness Protection needed more of me. Then, COVID hit and my family needed more of me so I pivoted to Quaranteam thinking that would be a more direct, helpful and interactive way to support everyone through it. I look back fondly on that period as the “Sourdough bread and Tiger King” phase of quarantine. Then one man said he couldn’t breathe. Four months later, here WE are, unable to breathe because fires have ruined the air or a virus ruined our lungs or anxiety has us holding our breath, and our kids, a little too tightly.
It’s a lot.
Most of us have been drafted into, or volunteered for, roles we wouldn’t have taken in any other circumstance. And what do we get for rising to the occasion?
I don’t know. I’m still waiting. I barely recognize my life anymore. Frankly, Each day I wake up and still have a company I’m profoundly grateful.
Friday night I was completing yet another task so wild no one would believe it which is good because no one wants to hear about it anyway, when I got the news, the last news any of us wanted to hear...the news NONE of us needed right now.
To many, Ruth Bader Ginsberg was a symbol of endurance, a public servant we elevated to celebrity status during a period when it felt impossible to find anything or anyone to believe in. As family relations became more strained and the gaps between generations made it harder to connect, we needed our wise grandmother, The Notorious RBG, in ways we didn’t want to explain because we were just so tired of talking about all of it.
In some ways, I think this is why she had to go. We were holding on a little too tightly, using her as a distraction. RBG was a unicorn, a woman who used her voice AND got what she asked for; a woman who fought the system and changed it for the better and eventually would be asked to uphold that very system for the rest of her life.
Democracy did not die with Justice Ginsberg. She wouldn’t want our hope to die, either. She would want us to fight.
One of her most famous quotes is:
"Real change, enduring change, happens one step at a time."
In a time when those steps are coming too close together and much too quickly for our tastes, it is calming to realize how MANY things we had been holding onto a little too tightly as we cling to the things we actually needed all along- each other. The hope that we could all emerge stronger as a community united behind our humanity rather than divided by our affiliation is bigger than one small woman, and that hope is what will be driving me as I fight yet another day. I hope it will drive you, as well.
Thank you for still being here. I have NO IDEA what tomorrow will bring, and I don’t want to make promises I cannot keep...I'm already breaking commitments right and left. I CAN promise that I will continue to record when I am inspired, that I will respond to listener requests when I am able, and that my silence doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten you. That isn’t possible.
